متن کاملNew Parallel Sparse Direct Solvers for Multicore Architectures
At the heart of many computations in science and engineering lies the need to efficiently and accurately solve large sparse linear systems of equations. Direct methods are frequently the method of choice because of their robustness, accuracy and potential for use as black-box solvers. In the last few years, there have been many new developments, and a number of new modern parallel general-purpo...
متن کاملAn Evaluation of Sparse Direct Symmetric Solvers: An Introduction and Preliminary Findings
In recent years a number of solvers for the direct solution of large sparse, symmetric linear systems of equations have been developed. These include solvers that are designed for the solution of positive-definite systems as well as those that are principally intended for solving indefinite problems. The available choice can make it difficult for users to know which solver is the most appropria...
متن کاملThe design of an out-of-core multifrontal solver for the 21st century
The popularity of direct methods for solving large sparse linear systems of equations Ax = b stems from their generality and robustness. Indeed, if numerical pivoting is properly incorporated, direct solvers rarely fail for numerical reasons; the main reason for failure is a lack of memory. Although increasing amounts of main memory have enabled direct solvers to solve many problems that were p...
متن کاملAn Experimental Evaluation of Iterative Solvers for Large SPD Systems of Linear Equations
Direct methods for solving sparse systems of linear equations are fast and robust, but can consume an impractical amount of memory, particularly for large three-dimensional problems. Preconditioned iterative solvers have the potential to solve very large systems with a fraction of the memory used by direct methods. The diversity of preconditioners makes it difficult to analyze them in a unified...
